Two Ships at Anchor

The painting features an attractive seascape with calm mirror-smooth water in which the Flemish ships lying at anchor are reflected. In the distance we can see a narrow strip of shoreline with some isolated buildings. Three-quarters of the canvas is taken up by the cloud-covered sky. The Hermitage painting was created in the artist?s mature period that was characterized by a tonal manner of painting.
