The State Hermitage Museum is temporally closed for visitors
Due to the measures to counter the spread of the coronavirus infection and on the basis of the Order of the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation No363 from 17 March 2020, the State Hermitage will be closed to visitors until further notice. This applies both to the Main Museum Complex and its separate branches.
The Hermitage is not shutting down. The museum is continuing to perform its basic functions in the preservation and study of the world’s cultural heritage, which at the present moment is becoming the priority in our work.
Access to the museum collections will be provided by a broad programme of online broadcasts of halls and exhibitions, including those that have already been prepared for their opening, and the showing of films, programmes and lectures about the Hermitage. The first online guided tour of the Staraya Derevnya Restoration and Storage Centre was given before the announcement of the closure of the museum and has already been viewed by more than 27,000 subscribers.
Over the next few days, we shall be drawing up a detailed timetable of live online broadcasts and showings of films and programmes about the Hermitage. They will be available on the museum’s official network pages and on the website online.hermitage.ru from 10.30 am to 6.00 pm, the Hermitage’s usual working hours. For those who wish to take a thoughtful unhurried virtual stroll around the museum halls, we suggest viewing the recently launched film The Hermitage Shot on an iPhone 11 Pro – a cinematic exploration of the museum that lasts 5 hours 20 minutes. It is accessible through the Hermitage’s official group in the VKontakte social network and on Youtube.
We are continuing to work to do everything possible not to separate our visitors from the collections of one of the world’s greatest museums. We hope that this way of presenting the museum will provide our virtual visitors with fresh interesting impressions.
Please note that all cyclical events are being postponed to later dates. If you have further questions, please contact the relevant services of the State Hermitage, which are continuing to function.
